Through conversations with library staff about the ideas of the travelling suitcases I designed as curiosity objects and the practical concerns for usability, I developed the piece in order to:
- Create an eye-catching vehicle evoking curiosity for reading
- that is also a portable work of art
- Using two revived antique suitcases
- Has a re-covered interior with book cloth, vintage stationary, old maps and text from discarded books
- Adjustable shelving for the display of different size books
- Is easy to assemble / disassemble and fit into a car
- Light enough to be carried by one person and has an accompanying trolley with wheels for transporting heavy books
- Is able to display books and information in a variety of different setting and be easy to ‘theme up’ using different luggage tags depending on the target group or event- such as travel, adventure, romance, comic books, SCI FI, Health and Wellbeing
- Weatherproofed and made durable by specialist paint, varnish and leather treatments
